Keep Moving Forward!

“It does not matter how slowly you go so long as you do not stop.”

~ Confucius

One of my favourite authors is the late Napoleon Hill who wrote the infamous book ‘Think and Grow Rich’. If you have not read this book then I highly recommend that you do so as this book has influenced many of today’s most wealthiest and successful people. His work is one of the main reasons why I started writing. Not long ago, I was reading one of his older works ‘The Law of Success’ and I remember him stating that he was only 25 years of age at the time of writing this masterpiece. I was stunned! I thought this man was at least 50 years old based on his wisdom alone. This revelation ignited something deep within my being. At that moment, I realized that it was time for a new chapter in my life. Just as it is never too late to start something, it’s never too soon to start something you would love to do either.

Upon this realization, I decided to write a book. I was 29 years old and set the goal to have my first book published by the age of 30. Well, that was over 3 years ago and I am just now announcing the completion of this goal. Yes, I finally have a published, hardcopy (paperback) version of ‘One Habit At A Time’. Based on the goal I set, I am about 2 years late. However, does it really matter that I finished late?

Anyone who has ever written a book understands that it is not an easy undertaking, especially for a first-time author. Here are just some of the steps you must take to complete this goal; formulate the main premise and purpose of the book; create an outline with a breakdown of the chapters; write the content and support it with references; edit the book for grammar, flow and reason. Those are most of the steps for writing the initial manual of the book. However, as I have discovered, this is only the beginning. By far the most difficult and overwhelming phase is getting the book published as a hardcopy.

I will not go into detail on the steps to publishing a book because it is beyond the scope of this article but I would like to stress that there were moments where I wanted to give up. There were times where I felt defeated. However, no matter how large the obstacles seemed, I kept moving forward. When you persistently move forward towards a goal, you will inevitably achieve it. Whether your goal is to lose weight, write a book or build a successful business, the result will always be the same if you keep moving forward – success.

How long will it take to achieve a goal? We often have an unrealistic sense of time. When I look back, I laugh at myself for thinking that I could write and publish a high-quality book in 1 year. Emotionally, we would like the goal to be realized as soon as possible; however, we must be careful not to let these emotions get the better of us. I know this may be difficult to hear for some, but the greatest goals require the greatest effort (hard work), the greatest time and for this reason, the greatest amount of perseverance. Remember, set some meaningful goals and…
